Here is a Powerpoint presentation I made up for my students at the University of Reading, where I have just finished teaching a course entitled ‘American State and Society and the Wider World, 1890-1990′. The students all had to write assessed essays; many of them were pretty good, but I felt that stressing the principles in this presentation would help them in the future. It is (rather arrogantly) entitled ‘Principles of essay writing’. I borrowed a couple of the points on slides 3 and 8 from my old mentor, Prof Avner Offer. If you find this useful please link to this site. If you have an opinion on my suggestions please leave a comment or send me an email.
